A 1 TB external hard drive has a multitude of possible uses. It seems like just a few years ago that a 1 GB hard drive was considered large and no one though they could fill it up! Now, we have reached the age of 1 TB hard drives which are (it’s hard to believe) 1000 gigabytes of storage capacity!
Some people choose to use a 1 TB external hard drive as storage for their media files. This may mean a large collection of mp3s and music files, video files for TV shows purchased from places like iTunes, or even large movie files which may be ripped from the DVD itself. These types of digital media files can take up a huge amount of room and, for example, can easily fill up the 160GB drive that comes with many notebook computers. Storing your large media files externally means that you will have access to them when you are at home, but you won’t need to carry them around when you are working remotely with your computer.
Many people who take a lot of photographs find than a 1 TB external hard drive is a great place to store all of these photos. Since digital camera memory cards are as large as 4GB, GB or even 16 GB these days, the drive that came with your computer may not be sufficient to hold all of your photos.
Perhaps the most common use for 1 TB external harddrives is for backing up your computer. Backing up is one of those things that everybody knows they should do, but few people actually do it until they have been burned by losing valuable data once or twice. Backing up used to be difficult when you had to spread your data across multiple CDs. Now, with 1 TB hard drives being as cheap as they are, there’s no excuse for simply keeping a backup of your entire harddrive so that if there’s ever a problem, you can restore the entire image!
